The journalist launched ‘KCBC’ (Katie Couric’s Book Club) this year, to encourage others to pick up a new read

Katie Couric has launched a book club! On Jan. 13, the journalist, 69, exclusively shared with PEOPLE that she will be leading the latest celebrity book club. Couric launched KCBC (short for Katie Couric’s Book Club), in order to help herself unplug, she said in an interview.

“I love to read,” Couric tells PEOPLE. “And I found that keeping up with current events, scrolling social media — doomscrolling more often than not — was just taking too much of my headspace and not leaving me with enough time to read great books.”

After she turned to her 2.1 million Instagram followers to see if they’d be interested in potentially joining a book club, she soon learned she wasn’t alone. “I think a lot of people are feeling they spend too much time on their phones,” Couric adds. “It’s not just a problem for teenagers, it’s a problem for adults too.” As such, Couric hopes her book club helps both her and her fans meet their reading goals. “I’m just going to pick one [title] and hope that people like it and that they’re excited by it,” she says.
